The cycling cap is one of the oldest pieces of kit there is, and this is Café du Cycliste’s Outlands take on it — built for going off the beaten track rather than for the peloton. Five-panel construction, a peak reconfigured for cycling, and a shape that fits neatly under a helmet.

The reason it is called a Summer cap is the fabric: a mesh that dries fast and wicks hard, so it stays comfortable when the temperature climbs. At around 50 grams it disappears into a jersey pocket when you take it off.

Five-panel build

Five panels rather than the traditional three, which gives a rounder, better-holding shape on the head — and room for the contrast colour blocking.

A peak made for riding

Shorter and reshaped so it keeps sun out of your eyes in the riding position instead of blocking your view of the road. Flip it up when you stop.

Mesh, for the heat

Fast drying and high wicking. This is the version of the cap you want when it is genuinely hot — it vents instead of holding sweat against your head.

Fits under a helmet

Cut low and close enough that it sits under a helmet without bunching, which is the whole point of a cycling cap as opposed to a normal one.

Why wear a cap under a helmet here

• It keeps sweat out of your eyes — the single most useful thing a cap does on a 40°C ride, and the reason the mesh version exists.
• Sun on the scalp — helmet vents are holes. A cap covers what they do not.
• Low sun — the peak earns its place on an early Al Qudra start or a late finish when the sun is straight down the road.
• Off the bike — helmet off at the coffee stop, cap stays on.
