A stiff sole is the cheapest speed you will ever buy. Once your foot stops flexing against the pedal, more of what you put in actually reaches the wheel, and long rides stop ending with sore arches. Road cycling shoes

Road shoes use a three-bolt cleat, a smooth sole and a stiff plate underfoot. They are built for pedalling, not walking, which is the trade you make for the efficiency. Look for a sole stiffness that matches your riding: a mid-range carbon-reinforced sole is plenty for most riders, and full carbon is worth it if you race or ride long. Mountain bike shoes

Two-bolt cleats, recessed into a lugged sole, so you can walk when the trail asks you to. They are also the sensible choice for commuting and for anyone who wants one pair that does everything, because you can get off and walk into a cafe without skating across the floor.

Indoor and spin shoes

Most studio bikes take a three-bolt road cleat, and a few take two-bolt. Ventilation matters more indoors than out, because there is no airflow to help you. If you are riding indoors through the UAE summer, prioritise mesh panels over stiffness.

Clipless, and why it is not as scary as it sounds

Clipless means your shoe clips into the pedal, confusingly. Nearly everyone has one slow-motion topple in the first week, usually at a junction, and then never again. Start with the release tension at its loosest, practise unclipping in a car park, and get into the habit of unclipping early as you slow down. It takes about two rides to stop thinking about it.

Getting the size right

Cycling shoes fit closer than trainers, and sizing varies a lot between brands. Feet also swell on a long ride in the heat here, so a shoe that is snug in the showroom at 9am can be tight at kilometre eighty. Our rule of thumb: firm across the midfoot, with a little room at the toes. Come and try a few pairs on. It takes ten minutes and it saves an expensive mistake.

Questions we get asked

Do I need cycling shoes to start? No. Flat pedals and trainers are a perfectly good way to begin. Most riders move to clipless once they start riding further than an hour.

Can I use road shoes on a mountain bike? Not really. The cleat pattern differs and the smooth sole is miserable off the bike. If you ride both, mountain shoes are the versatile choice.

Do shoes come with cleats? It varies by model, and cleats are matched to your pedals rather than your shoes. Ask us and we will make sure you leave with the right pair fitted.

How tight should they be? Snug, not painful, with no heel lift when you pull up. If your toes go numb, they are too tight or the cleat is too far forward.

Fitting and aftercare

We fit cleats in the showroom, and a small adjustment to cleat position fixes most knee and hotspot complaints. If something does not feel right after a few rides, bring the shoes and the bike in and we will look at both together. You can book a bike service at the same time, and our 15-minute check before a long ride is worth a read. Do not forget a helmet either.
