Why a bent dropout is worth replacing
A derailleur hanger is a sacrificial part. Even a small bend you cannot see by eye pulls the rear derailleur out of parallel with the cassette, and the symptoms look exactly like a worn drivetrain: hesitant shifts in one direction, chain noise in the largest sprockets, a gear that will not hold. On an electronic groupset it can also show up as repeated auto-trim or a shift that refuses to complete.
A bent hanger is also the thing standing between a hard shift and a destroyed rear derailleur or a torn carbon frame. If your bike has been knocked over, shipped, or has shifted into the spokes, replace the hanger rather than trying to live with it.
Fitting
- Remove the rear wheel and the rear derailleur before unbolting the dropout.
- Clean the frame interface and use a little grease or the assembly paste specified for your frame on the bolts.
- Tighten to the torque printed on the frame or given in your BMC manual. Do not guess on a carbon frame.
- Have the alignment checked with a hanger alignment gauge once fitted. A new hanger is not automatically a straight one.

How do I know my Timemachine takes dropout #36?
Compare the old one side by side, or send us your frame model, model year and serial number. BMC assigns the dropout per frame platform and model year, so the model name on its own is not always enough.
My shifting went bad after a crash. Is it the dropout?
Very often, yes. It is the first thing a mechanic checks. A hanger can look straight and still be a degree or two out, which is enough to ruin indexing across the cassette.
Can a bent dropout be straightened instead?
A light bend can sometimes be corrected with an alignment gauge. One that has already been straightened once, or that is visibly deformed or cracked, should be replaced. Aluminium work-hardens and the second failure tends to happen under load.
Should I keep a spare?
If you race or travel with the bike, yes. A time-trial bike in a bike box is exactly the situation where a hanger gets bent, and a spare in the case is what saves the event.
