HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST GRAVEL BIKES

As with most bikes, different gravel bikes come with a variety of features and in various price points. What you choose will depend on the kind of gravel riding you enjoy, whether it’s riding on mixed terrain or off-roading for longer, like a backpacking ride, and your budget.

Some gravel bikes, like the Giant Revolt X Gravel Bike, are perfect as all-rounders, which are designed for mixed terrain, gravel grinders, and general gravel fun. Other gravel bikes are well-suited for sturdy and stable rides over rough terrain but might not be light or fast enough for you.

Here are tips on how to choose the best gravel bikes for your needs.

  • Figure out where you’re going to ride: Where will you mostly go to ride the gravel bike? Gravel can mean well-maintained dirt roads to barely maintained paths that hardly ever see any other vehicle. Where you ride will determine the drivetrain, gearing selection, tyre size, and frame material of your gravel bike.
  • Identify your riding goals: Are you going to use the gravel bike for solo bikepacking, group adventure riding, or for manoeuvering unpaved roads in your neighbourhood? How you ride will tell whether to prioritize durability, weight, and added features (e.g., mounts for bags, spare bottles, cargo racks, etc.,)
  • Come up with a budget: Good gravel bikes don’t have to be expensive. If you’re just starting out with this bike, try an all-rounder gravel bike that you can take just about anywhere and choose steel or aluminum, both of which tend to be less expensive than titanium and carbon-fiber.
  • Go on a test ride: Although it’s always helpful to check out gravel bike reviews, to find out which brands could work for your riding needs, it’s always best to try out the bike. Bikeera sales specialists can help narrow down your selection as you try out a few bikes. Go with what feels right for you.

FAQs

A gravel bike is a versatile bike built to handle a mix of surfaces — paved roads, gravel tracks, dirt paths — combining elements from both road bikes and mountain bikes. It’s different from a road bike or a mountain bike in terms of tire width, frame geometry, and suspension.

Yes, a gravel bike is good for commuting on city streets, especially if your route includes mixed surfaces or imperfect roads. Gravel bikes are made to handle rougher surfaces (potholes, uneven pavement, cobblestones), so they tend to be tougher over time. The best gravel bikes are also designed to reduce vibrations and fatigue, especially in stop-and-go traffic.

If your commute includes some bumpy roads, rough patches, or you want a bike you can use for both commuting and weekend adventures, a gravel bike is often a smart choice.

Titanium gravel bikes are worth the price for their strength-to-weight and fatigue resistance. corrosion resistance and durability (i.e., titanium does not rust like steel, and it also tends to retain its structural integrity over many years), and overall comfort.

If you ride often, over varied surfaces, want longevity and a premium feel, and are OK with higher upfront cost, then yes — the best titanium gravel bike can be worth it. For more casual riders, there might be more affordable alternatives that satisfy most of the important requirements.

You’ll know what size you’ll need by using a gravel bike size chart. Many manufacturers or retailers offer gravel bike size charts that map rider height (and sometimes inseam length) to a frame size (in cm or labelled Small/Medium/Large). Frame geometry also matters: “reach” (horizontal distance) affects how stretched-out or upright you’ll be; “stack” (vertical height) affects how upright vs aggressive the position is. Different brands have different geometry even for the same nominal size.

Finally, nothing substitutes going on a test ride. Even small differences in fit (stem length, handlebar width, saddle position) can change comfort dramatically. Drop by the Bikeera shop and we’ll help you choose the right gravel bike size.

A gravel bike can replace a mountain bike if the terrain you’re riding on includes a mix of non-extreme off-road surfaces. But if you’re into serious mountain biking, you’ll need to retain a mountain bike for those more challenging terrains.

Flat gravel bikes are not faster, but they’re more comfortable. The upright posture lessens strain on the back and wrists, but it makes you less aerodynamic as you ride. For speed and versatility, test ride a drop bar gravel bike.
