Uvex Bike Helmets: Sizing, Fit and MIPS Explained
Stand at any traffic light on Jumeirah Beach Road on a Friday morning and you will see it: helmets tipped back on the crown of the head, straps hanging loose, retention dials wound to nothing. All of them expensive. Most of them, in an impact, doing a fraction of what they could.
A helmet is the one piece of kit where the fit matters more than the price tag. A correctly fitted mid-range helmet protects you better than a badly fitted flagship, every time.
A Uvex bike helmet is what most of our customers end up in, because Uvex makes up the large majority of what we carry, in road, trail, urban and kids’ fits, so this guide is written around that range — how to size one, how to check it fits, what MIPS actually does, and when to stop using the one you own.
How do you measure your head for a Uvex bike helmet?
Helmet sizing is not S, M and L the way clothing is. It is a head circumference in centimetres, and the letters are only a label attached to a range.
Take a soft tape measure and run it around your head about a centimetre above your eyebrows and above your ears, at the widest part of the skull. Keep the tape level and read the number in centimetres.
Then match that number to the range printed for the specific helmet, not to the letter. Across our own helmet range you will find bands like 52–56, 52–57, 53–56, 54–58 and 55–58 cm — several of them labelled with the same overlapping letters. Two helmets both marked S/M are not necessarily the same size.
If your measurement sits at the top of one band and the bottom of the next, take the larger and close it down with the retention dial. A helmet that needs the dial wound fully tight to stay put is too big. One that presses at the temples on its loosest setting is too small.
How do you know a helmet actually fits?
Four checks, and they take about a minute.
Position first. The front rim should sit roughly two finger-widths above your eyebrows, level, not tipped back. A helmet worn back on the crown leaves your forehead exposed in exactly the impact you are most likely to have.
Then the retention dial. Snug enough that the helmet stays in place with the straps undone, loose enough to wear for three hours without a pressure headache.
Then the straps. The side straps should form a Y that meets just below and slightly forward of your earlobe, and the chin strap should leave about two fingers of room — you should feel it pull down slightly when you open your mouth wide.
Finally the shake test. Fastened, take the helmet in both hands and try to rotate it forwards and back, then side to side. Your skin should move with it. If the helmet slides independently of your scalp, it will not stay where it needs to be.
What is MIPS, and does it do anything?
MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System. Physically it is a low-friction layer mounted inside the helmet, between the padding and the shell.
MIPS describes it as designed to move slightly inside the helmet to help redirect forces away from the head, addressing what happens in an oblique — angled — impact rather than a straight-on one. Their reasoning is that rotational motion is a common cause of concussion and more serious brain injury in angled hits.
What matters just as much is what MIPS does not claim. They publish no injury-reduction percentage, no figure for how far the layer actually moves, and an explicit statement that no helmet or impact protection system can protect a user from all injuries. That is the honest framing, and any shop telling you a MIPS helmet prevents concussion is overselling it.
Is a MIPS helmet worth the extra?
Usually, and our range makes the comparison unusually easy because several helmets are offered in both versions — same shell, same fit, one with the layer added.
If the price gap between the two versions is modest, take the MIPS one. It addresses a real category of impact and you will not think about it again.
But the order matters. A well-fitted helmet without MIPS beats a poorly fitted helmet with it, so if the MIPS version only comes in a size that does not suit your head, buy the one that fits. Fit first, layer second.

There are road fits built around ventilation, trail fits with more coverage at the back of the head, urban fits for commuting, and a proper kids’ range rather than adult helmets in small sizes. Do you need a road-specific helmet?
Not strictly. Any helmet certified for cycling is dramatically better than none, and the certification is the same across categories. What differs is the design emphasis.
Road helmets prioritise ventilation and low weight, with large vents and no peak. Trail helmets extend further down the back of the head and add a peak, accepting a little more weight for that coverage. Urban helmets favour a simpler shell, often with reflectives or a light mount.
If your riding is mixed — a few mornings on the Al Wathba loop and the occasional trip out to Hatta — a well-ventilated road helmet is the more useful single purchase in this climate. Come and try both and we will show you why on your own head.
Why does ventilation matter more in the UAE?
Because vents do real work here. A hot head degrades concentration and inflates perceived effort long before it becomes dangerous, and the last hour of a summer ride is when both matter most.
This is one place where spending more buys something you feel on every single ride, unlike a few grams of weight. Look for large front intakes and clear exhaust channels rather than counting vents.
One practical note: a helmet full of dried sweat will smell, and the salt hardens the pads. The pads on most of our helmets are removable and washable, and doing that every few weeks in summer roughly doubles how long a helmet stays pleasant to wear. When should you replace a bike helmet?
One absolute rule and one judgement call.
The absolute rule: after any impact, replace it, even if it looks fine. The liner works by crushing and it does not spring back, so the damage that matters is often invisible from outside. Uvex say it plainly — bike helmets must be replaced after an accident.
The judgement call is age. Uvex’s own guidance is to replace a helmet roughly three to five years after first use depending on how hard it is used, and to retire any helmet older than about eight years regardless. In this climate, lean towards the shorter end: UV, sweat and heat age straps, pads and the liner faster than a temperate garage does, and a helmet that lives in a car boot through a Dubai summer ages faster still.
Replace it sooner than that if the straps have stiffened, the pads have gone hard, the shell is cracked or the retention system no longer holds. Bring it in and we will tell you honestly whether it is done.
Why buy a helmet in person?
Because head shapes differ as much as head sizes, and two helmets in the same stated size can feel completely different on you. That is not something a size chart can solve.

Measure your head. Match the centimetre range for the specific helmet rather than the letter. Run the four fit checks. Take MIPS if the price gap is small and the fit is the same. Then weigh ventilation heavily, because in this climate you will feel it every ride.
