Shimano SH-XC503 (XC5) cross-country MTB shoe in black, standard width, with a BOA® L6C dial and a recessed SPD cleat pocket.
- Carbon-fibre-reinforced nylon midsole, stiffness 7
- ULTREAD XC rubber outsole with toe-spike mount
- EU 40–46; SPD cleats sold separately
The Shimano SH-XC503, Shimano’s XC5, is a light, stiff cross-country shoe made for racing and comfortable enough for long days on the trail. Its carbon-fibre-reinforced nylon midsole sits flush with the upper for stable pedalling and direct power transfer, and the BOA® L6C dial, with a rubber grip and a protective bash guard, lets you fine-tune the fit on the move.
This is the Black, standard-width version (Shimano code ESHXC503MGL01). Shimano’s ULTREAD XC rubber outsole sheds mud and grips when you are off the bike, the recessed SPD cleat pocket keeps walking easy, and a reinforced mount takes 18 mm toe spikes for loose, steep climbs, whether that is the rocky singletrack at Hatta, the Showka trail in Ras Al Khaimah or the Al Qudra MTB loop.
Choose your size
- Foot length to EU size (Shimano chart): EU 40 = 25.2 cm (US 7) · EU 41 = 25.8 cm (US 7–7.5) · EU 42 = 26.5 cm (US 8.5) · EU 43 = 27.2 cm (US 9) · EU 44 = 27.8 cm (US 10) · EU 45 = 28.5 cm (US 10.5) · EU 46 = 29.2 cm (US 11–11.5).
- Measure your foot: stand on a sheet of paper against a wall, mark your longest toe and measure in cm. Shimano says cycling shoes should fit snugly; if you are between sizes, go up one. The full chart and measuring guide are in the last photo.
- Standard width: this is the regular fit. Shimano also makes an SH-XC503 Wide and sizes from EU 38 to 50; we don’t stock those here, so message us and we will check.
- Cleats not included: add Shimano SPD cleats such as the SM-SH51 or SM-SH56.

What makes it work
BOA® L6C dial
A rubber-gripped dial with a protective bash guard: tighten or release the fit in small steps, even mid-ride.
ULTREAD XC outsole
Sheds mud and grips off the bike. The reinforced toe mount takes 18 mm spikes for loose climbs.
Surround-wrap upper
Synthetic leather and breathable TPU mesh wrap the foot with less overlap, for a snug, glove-like fit.
Low-stack midsole
A seamless midsole and Shimano’s DYNALAST shape keep you close to the pedal for a smoother, more efficient upstroke.
Who it is for
- XC racers and marathon riders stepping up to a light, stiff race shoe.
- Trail riders who push up rocky sections and need grip off the bike.
- Gravel riders who want an SPD shoe with a proper off-road tread.
Pair them with Shimano SPD pedals such as the PD-M8100 with SM-SH51 cleats. Looking for a higher-end Shimano XC shoe? See the SH-XC703 and SH-XC903.
Shoe, sole and size details are listed in the Information tab.
Not on Shimano’s product pages: the shoe weight. The figure in the Information tab (about 300 g per shoe in EU 42) comes from Shimano dealers. The Weight row at the top of the Information tab is the boxed shipping weight.
Questions people ask
Which size should I order?
Measure your foot length in cm and use Shimano’s chart: 40 = 25.2 cm, 41 = 25.8 cm, 42 = 26.5 cm, 43 = 27.2 cm, 44 = 27.8 cm, 45 = 28.5 cm, 46 = 29.2 cm. Shimano says cycling shoes should fit snugly; if you are between sizes, go up one, or message us before you order.
Do they come with cleats?
No, cleats are sold separately. The SH-XC503 takes Shimano SPD (2-bolt) cleats: we stock the SM-SH51 and SM-SH56.
Can I walk in them?
Yes. The ULTREAD XC rubber outsole is made for grip off the bike and the cleat sits recessed in the sole. For steep, loose hike-a-bike sections you can fit 18 mm toe spikes.
Is this the wide version?
No. This is the standard width (the “S” before the size in the code). Shimano makes an SH-XC503 Wide as a separate model; it is not stocked here, so message us and we will check.
Do they work with road (SPD-SL) pedals?
No. The sole takes 2-bolt SPD cleats for MTB-style SPD pedals, not 3-bolt road cleats.
What is the product code?
Shimano ESHXC503MGL01 (Black, standard width); the size follows, for example ESHXC503MGL01S40000 is EU 40.
