The Shimano 105 R7100 Di2 Disc electronic 12-speed groupset has disc brakes and is semi-wireless, just like the Shimano Ultegra 8100 and the Shimano Dura-Ace 9270! The Shimano 105 R7100 Di2 Disc groupset is an attractive choice for cyclists looking for the shifting performance of an Ultegra or Dura Ace groupset at a more affordable price level. You get a lot of value for your money. Fast, smooth shifting, even under heavy strain. Reliable and direct braking with more control. And a large gear range with chainrings of 50-34 with a cassette option of 11-34!
Shifters
The shifters’ ergonomics have been further improved. It’s easier to position your fingers under the shifters and the shifter covers offer more grip. Plus, it’s now easier to adopt different hand positions. The stroke of the brake levers is adjustable, making the brakes suitable for cyclists with smaller hands too. In addition, the height of the Di2 buttons has been increased by 1.5 mm for both buttons. This makes it easier to operate the buttons even when wearing gloves or in the cold.
Disc brakes
The disc brakes have also been upgraded. The CNC milled aluminium Shimano 105 caliper is made up of 2 parts. As with the Dura-Ace and Ultegra calipers, 10% more space has been created between the brake pads and the rotors. This ensures the brakes do not, or hardly, rub when you are not braking. Nothing is more annoying than rotors rubbing up during a climb or a sprint. In addition, the braking power and control have noticeably improved.
Derailleurs
The shifting speed of the front and rear derailleurs has been increased significantly, by 58% and 45% respectively compared to the previous Shimano Di2 derailleurs. They have also been further improved, in particular to ensure better gear shifting under strain. This is immediately noticeable when climbing uphill or when accelerating. The front derailleur is comparable to those of the R8000 series, and can handle up to 52 teeth in front.
Hyperglide
Hyperglide cassettes are available in different ratios. These ratios all feature the ‘sweet spots’, on the 6th, 7th and 8th sprockets. 12 speed makes it possible to keep the cogs that are most comfortable to ride at medium speeds despite large ratio differences. The cassettes come with the HG mounting pattern, which is also compatible with all Shimano HG 11 speed bodies.
Semi-wireless
This Shimano 105 R7100 Di2 Disc group only has a cable connection between the battery and the front and rear derailleur. The shifting performance has been taken to an even higher level. Not only has the shifting speed been increased, you can now also shift while pedalling. Plus, there’s no need for a junction box anymore, but you can adjust and charge the groupset via the rear derailleur. When the groupset is fully charged, you can cycle for about 1000 kilometres. The wireless shifters each contain a button cell battery which will last up to 3 years before needing to be replaced.
Brake maintenance
Maintenance of the brakes is simplified. It’s possible to bleed the brake without removing the caliper from the frame, thanks to a separate bleeding port and a rotary valve. A new funnel and spacer for bleeding the caliper help optimise the bleeding process.
Shimano DI2 app
Adjusting settings, such as assigning shift buttons, shifting ways or adjusting shifting speed, can be done via the Shimano Di2 app. The function of the shift buttons can be adjusted individually. The synchronised shift or semi-synchronised shift where the front derailleur automatically shifts to the ideal chainline is still possible.
